YOUNG WOMEN URGED TO TAP INTO THE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY

A training program has been organized by the Centre for Maritime Training and Development Foundation for Younger Women at Spintex, a suburb of Accra, with the aim of equipping those who aspire to be in the maritime industry with the needed self-development and personal branding skills.
At the event a panel discussed the shipping industry’s requirements, including, personal branding, behaviour and communication among others.
The training event, was also used to lunch the Foundation’s pilot project, dubbed “She mentors Shipping” which seeks to give opportunities to young women in tertiary institutions pursuing careers in shipping and maritime to be mentored by industrial professionals in order to make informed career choices and develop themselves.
The CEO of Centre for Maritime Training and Development Foundation for Younger Women, Rikiyatu Berbie explained that the outfit intends to bridge the current gender imbalance gap in the maritime and shipping industry in Ghana.
“We are in an industry where there are very few women, we need to groom the younger ones to be able to takeover,”
Naa Densua Aryeetey, Director for Women International STA International for Africa, who chaired the event, emphasized the need for mentorship in developing the younger generation of women into the shipping industry.
“When some of us came into the Maritime industry we did not find a lot of women in the industry that we could look up to. So we can say we were sort of first generation but we realised that mentoring the younger ones coming up is key to development,”
